The C language is designed to be portable to a wide range of computers. In fact, a compiler is a part of every textbook that covers the language. In theory you can take C programs and write them for any computer, but this rarely happens in practice. The predominance of Unix and Windows computers in the industry has essentially locked C software into that environment. Therefore, it is difficult to take a C program and run it on a Macintosh. On most of the Unix machines, the C programs that work and those that don't are usually quickly apparent, but a program that works on one machine may fail on another. In general, it is better for C programs to be portable (to systems outside the range of the Unix family, at least) than it is for them to be portable to any computer. Accepting this, the book's C programs are largely designed with portability in mind.

There are many ways in which the authors view their work on C. The title of this book is a statement of fact rather than a claim of authorship. In contrast to the first edition, The C Programming Language does not contain a research paper. Rather it includes pointers to historical materials, as well as to what the authors claim are the principal contributions of the book. The textbook is intended to provide the basis from which detailed books can be written, and when the distribution of detailed material is made available it will continue to provide the basis. This book is not an encyclopedic reference. If you wish to know about the details of the language standard, please consult the standard manual. When you are working with the language, you can get more information about details by reading code than by consulting the manuals.

We are sure that we are not the first to write a book about C. Many excellent books have been published on the language before this book. The book may have taken some of its information from these books, but we have tried to provide sources for all the historical material about the design of the C language and the creation of the standard.
